SKETCH COVERS

Sketch covers come in two flavours: blank variants (a white or black cover sold for fans to commission original art) and partial-sketch variants (covers with pencilled but uninked art). A blank cover with original art from a notable artist is effectively a one-of-a-kind piece and can command extraordinary prices far above the underlying book's value.

COLLECTOR TIPS — SKETCH COVERS

What experienced collectors check before buying sketch covers.

1

If the cover has original art, photograph it thoroughly — the artist's name and quality of the art drives value more than the comic itself.

2

Blank variants without art are often worth only slightly above cover price unless the issue is significant.

3

Convention-exclusive sketch covers are typically numbered; confirm if yours is a numbered edition.

4

Grading a sketch cover will note the original art; CGC's purple label indicates a cover with original art.
