DETAILED DESCRIPTION, ALLOWED DEFECTS & SELLER TIP

📖 APPEARANCE

Flat, bright, perfectly centred cover. Spine is tight and supple with zero stress lines. Corners are sharp to a needle point. Pages are white and fresh. Staples are original, bright, and rust-free.

✓ ALLOWED DEFECTS

  • Imperceptible printing imperfections only

✕ DEAL BREAKERS (DROPS GRADE)

  • Any colour break on spine
  • Any corner blunting
  • Any staple discolouration
  • Any page yellowing

💡 SELLER TIP

Practically impossible to achieve from a read copy. If you think a book is GM, submit to CGC — don't list it raw at this grade.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION, ALLOWED DEFECTS & SELLER TIP

📖 APPEARANCE

Square, flat, and bright. Spine shows at most one tiny stress line invisible at arm's length. Corners are nearly pointed. Staples perfectly centred, no rust. Pages white to off-white.

  • Infinitesimal corner blunting

✕ DEAL BREAKERS (DROPS GRADE)

  • Any colour breaks
  • Multiple stress lines

💡 SELLER TIP

If you can see the flaw from across the room, it's not Mint. Very few raw copies legitimately grade 9.9.

⚠️ COMMON GRADING MISTAKES TO AVOID

Grading in bad lighting

Always inspect under a bright, angled lamp or LED light. Spine stress lines and shallow creases are nearly invisible in overhead room lighting.

Forgetting the spine check

Hold the book closed and look down the spine from one end. Any rolling or creasing that's invisible face-on will appear immediately.

Ignoring page quality

A book with a gorgeous cover can have deeply tanned, brittle pages inside. Always flip through. Tanned pages typically drop a book at least one full grade band.

Aspirational grading

"NM to me" is the number one cause of disputes. When in doubt, grade one step down. An honestly graded VF sells faster than an over-graded NM.

Overlooking staple rust migration

Even light rust on staples can mean rust has already migrated to the pages surrounding the staple holes. Check both inside and out.

Not checking the centrefold

A detached or loose centrefold drops most books to VG or below regardless of cover condition. Always check that the middle pages are secure.

🔑 What's a Key Issue?

A key issue is a comic that marks a significant moment in a character's or story's history, and because of that significance it tends to hold or grow in value over time.

🦸

FIRST APPEARANCE

The issue where a character appears for the first time. The most sought-after type of key.

🎭

ORIGIN ISSUE

Reveals how a character got their powers or identity, even if they appeared earlier.

💀

DEATH ISSUE

A major character dies. Especially valuable if the death is permanent (rare in comics).

🔄

TURNING POINT

Major costume change, new villain debut, or storyline milestone. Pivotal moments collectors track.

Grading matters more for keys: a 9.8 copy of a major key can be worth 3–10× a 9.0 of the same issue. That's why collectors pay a premium for CGC or CBCS-certified slabs — the grade is independently verified and the book is preserved.
