Young Bruce Wayne mentored with Zatara as part of his rigorous training to become The Batman. Part of his studies include learning to be an escape artist. Bruce uses the name "John Smith". It is during the time that he develops a close relationship with the magician's daughter, Zatanna.
The Hypnotist offers an invitation for Bruce to study with him as well. Zatara discourages this. At the end of his studies, Zatara entrusts Bruce with a mystic jeweled amulet.
Years later, Batman, Robin and Zatanna fend off The Hypnotist in his quest to possess the amulet.
NOTE: While he does not make a physical appearance. Zatara speaks into one of the two jeweled amulets to a "Clark".
Also of note is that this annual connects to Superman Adventures Annual 1 and Adventures in the DC Universe Annual 1.
