Feeling lonely, Tin builds himself a robot companion using a do-it-yourself kit and one of Magnus' responsometers. When Mercury ridicules the new robot, causing conflict among the team, Tin and his companion flee Earth in the Metal Men's jetaway to find a new home. During their journey through space, they discover a series of abandoned planetoids infested with robot termites and encounter a massive structure-devouring machine that follows them back to Earth, threatening the planet and the Metal Men.
