Earth's heroes are mysteriously abducted and brought aboard a large ship. Two cosmic beings reveal themselves as responsible: the Grandmaster and Death. The Grandmaster wants to win a contest against Death to resurrect his recently deceased brother, the Collector. Death has the power to restore life, and agrees to the challenge. Each entity selects twelve players from among the captured heroes to compete in this high-stakes game.
