Using damaged DNA from the mutant now known as Wolverine, X-23 is created. Two men molded X-23 into a killing machine: project leader MARTIN SUTTER and DR. ZANDER RICE, the son of the man who was killed by WEAPON X when he retrieved the original DNA sample. X-23 is an assassin for hire, her services rented out to the highest bidder. But over the years, Zander has transferred his hatred of Weapon X onto X-23; during a mission to kill an AIM scientist, Zander left X-23 behind to die. She survives by massacring scores of AIM soldiers and instinctively returns to the place where she was created. Sarah is distraught over the life she forced upon X-23. Her feelings of guilt are made all the more painful as she sees through letters and pictures her niece Megan's happiness. But when a serial killer abducts Megan, Sarah uses X-23 to rescue her. When Zander informs Martin that Sarah has taken X-23, he interrupts Rachel to prevent her from telling Martin that their son is actually Zander's, the result of their longtime affair. As Martin considers Sarah's punishment, Zander makes his own plans. Out of false concern for his surrogate father's health, Zander convinces Martin to hand him over control of the Facility to him.
