Originally serialized in Monthly Asuka, it is technically regarded as a shojo manga though its graphic content and current tragic events at the time of its original publication caused it to be put on a perpetual hiatus in 2003 while the authors would try to find a proper way to publish their intended ending. Currently, it has never been returned to and while it was originally their longest-running series, since its hiatus, two longer series have been published from start to finish and it has now been on hiatus longer than it was ongoing.
