WONDER GIRL #1
“Champion, Part 1: The Labors of Cassandra”
November 2007
Overview After the disastrous events of AMAZONS ATTACK, Wonder Girl strikes out to tie up some particularly monstrous loose ends. But with the rift between her and Wonder Woman, she's going to need the help of the last man on Earth she ever wanted to see again! WONDER GIRL will take Cassie Sandsmark to all corners of the DCU, from the dangers within WONDER WOMAN to TEEN TITANS to COUNTDOWN, and will change Wonder Girl forever! With the world not too fond of Wonder Girl's recent actions during the Amazons Attack war, Cassie is living a low-key life in Georgetown, Washington D.C. When going out, she takes a cue from Connor and wears glasses and puts her hair up. She is renting a room from an elderly lady. She tells her that they will be getting a new "roommate" as a visiting professor will be staying there. Heading to a pay phone, Cassie has arranged to receive a call from her mother at a set time. It turns out her mother bought a cell phone which concerns Cassie. She is concerned with how she paid for the phone and what name she used. She has been staying in Greece and says having a cell phone would make it easier to contact her. Cassie says she should just call the Titans Tower but her mom says she's never there anymore. Cassie sees a news report on a television in a store window with Robin and darts off, cutting off her conversation with her mother. A protest is happening over some hydra eggs left over from the Amazons. The police aren't sure what to do with them and there are people protesting over animal rights. Wonder Girl shows up and says they need to be destroyed. They are too dangerous to keep at a zoo or sanctuary. Robin says there's always Superman's Fortress. Robin tells here that he was actually in the area to talk to her. He wants to talk about the kiss they shared. He stumbles with his words and she takes it the wrong way. Then the hyrdas begin to hatch. Robin throws some batarangs at them wondering how they can stop them. Cassie simply replies by going up to each head and snapping it's neck. Robin tells her that was impressive but scary. He wants to finish what he was trying to say. Cassie cuts him off saying she gets it. It was just a "heat of the moment" thing. Upset, she flies off before he can say another word. Left behind, Robin says now he understands why Batman avoids the relationships. Elsewhere, some Army soldiers prepare to take on another Amazonian beast. Some battle beasts have been seen. Wonder Girl arrives and tells them they will not be able to handle them. When the commander tries telling her that she needs to leave and that it's her people's fault this is going on, she destroys their vehicles. She tells them they are not equipped to handle them. If they want to kill themselves trying, they are welcome to it. Spying a battle beast sleeping, she figures taking out one shouldn't be a problem. Detecting her scent, it wakes up. As she takes it down, she is soon visited by three more. Not sure if she can take on all three, she is surprised to hear her "brother" Hercules is there to help her.
