From 29th August 1981 Judge Dredd starred in a newspaper strip in British newspaper the Daily Star, initially appearing in the weekend editions and later in the weekday issues. From 1985 Fleetway collected some of the strips in what ultimately became a total of five Judge Dredd Collections (plus a Mega Collection which only reprinted material already reprinted in the first five volumes). The fourth volume reprinted several strips already printed in earlier volumes alongside new material, while the fifth reprinted a single, lengthy storyline from the weekday strip.
The last collection was released in 1990, but 2000AD, Judge Dredd Megazine and respective annuals have occasionally reprinted some of the strips, including some not included in these collections. The Daily Star strip continued until 1998, a total of 3698 installments, only a fraction of which have been reprinted anywhere. The newspaper strip was revived between January 2004 and January 2005 in the free London newspaper, The Metro; again, a handful of the stories have been reprinted in Judge Dredd Megazine, but there are no collections.
