Guy Gardner is battling Xar as a new recruit and his comrades are dying all around him. It is at this point that the story goes into a flashback of how Guy got his ring saving his brother's life. it also goes into how Guy is the black sheep of his family and doesn't have a good relationship with either his father or his brother. Story goes back to the moment of a captured Xar and into the moment he meets Hal Jordan.
