As a young man, Clark Kent discovers that he is susceptible to magic. He encounters Zatara the Magician performing with his daughter, Zatanna. Clark asks Zatara to teach him magic, so that he is better prepared to fend against it. He goes by the name "John Smith" with the magician. He gets a fleeting glimpse of another "John Smith".
Years later, Dr. Fate, Kent Nelson, requests Superman's help defeating a netherworld demon. The pair work together to drive the demon back.
