Emmanuel Guibert met Alan Ingram Cope, who would die 5 years later, aged 74, and they became friends. Cope would tell Guibert his memories about the time when he was a soldier. Guibert then decide to pay hommage to his friend more than to the war. The story focuses mainly in the everyday life of the soldier.
