The Preservers dutifully have been wrapping up animals who chance encounter the Valley of Endless Sleep for Winnowill. Their success is testified by the silence of their grove. But Greymung senses that there are many treasures into this area, so he selects one of his subjects named Grutch to enter and find it.
The Preservers attempt to seal the troll up in wrapstuff, but Grutch is too strong. The preservers lose many other animals previously comatose inside a hibernatory cocoon. Eventually, Grutches legs become partially knotted, and he falls. He then laughs and shared Old Maggoty's dreamberry wine with Petalwing.
