The Story of Goodtree's Treeshaping abilities are told.
The wolfriders try to convince Goodtree to claim her place as Chieftess, but she declines and goes on her personal pilgrimage. While ascending a mountain, she grabs at a root for a handhold, and it rips out from the earth. She falls back over a cliff, and her recognised partner Acorn goes into a coma when she does.
She needs to isolate herself and delve into meditation, communing with the ancestry of The High-Ones. What she discovers is the balance between divine talent and raw elemental mental force, thus unlocking the secret of the seed itself.
