Marrik and Chandra are set for some relaxation at Sector Base Alpha, but arrive to find it destroyed. Marrik insists on looking over the base, despite the unlikelihood of survivors, since the base is close to Cygnus X-1. Chandra senses an observer, but he flees. Marrik encounters a person without a suit, surviving in the unshielded base, open to hard radiation. He attacks, but the person rips off the front of Marrik's suit. Marriks falls off a catwalk, but grabs a cable, The cable breaks and hangs him up by one leg. In an interlude, the planet Korlinos, as barren as the moon after an ancient war is deserted, except for its computer system. Marrik awakes in his bed on the Exeter, with Chandra next to him. He kicks her out and takes a shower. Chandra goes to the bridge and complains about Marrik to Kobol, the ships computer, but something interrupts them. Marrik realises that something is off about his rescue and rushes to the bridge. On the planet Deadwood, a surveillance operation is bungled. The lead agent, Jeremy Hawke, is called to Alpha Base to investigate the disappearance of the crown prince, who was inspecting the base when it was attacked. On the Exeter, Marrik arrives on the bridge to find two strangers, one of whom was the person who ripped open his suit.
