Most soldiers are only too pleased to win a medal - not that you'd hear them admit it, of course - for a medal is small enough reward for deeds of gallantry and colossal risk.
Sergeant Tim Brannigan was a holder of the Military Medal, and he should have been a proud man because they don't give out M.M.'s for bunfights in the canteen. But Tim was far from happy about it = it seemed to make him jumpy and short-tempered somehow... almost scared sometimes.
And never more so than when the Jerry mortars opened up...
