BUFFALO BILL

Buffalo Bill was a Boardman volume recounting fictional adventures of the real life Western hero. Initially these were reprints of a European strips drawn by Swedish artist Lennart Ek, but later British creator Dennis McLoughlin wrote and drew some of them. Clarifying the title and explaining the numbering gaps.From 1948 Boardman Books' imprint Popular Press began releasing a comic series which used rotogravure printing. The series alternated between different characters from issue to issue, initially mostly between original British characters, most written and drawn by Dennis McLoughlin, but later also reprinting some US strips Boardman had arranged licenses to use. Confusingly, the series initially didn't carry a title, instead using the name of whichever character was appearing in that issue on the front cover, though the numbering made it clear it was considered by Boardman to be a single series. The later issues dropped the expensive rotogravure printing, and began listing the title, but again switched from issue to issue (e.g. those featuring Roy Carson were identified as Roy Carson Comic, while those featuring Swift Morgan were Swift Morgan Space Comic or Swift Morgan, Spaceways Comic), while sequential numbering showed these "different" titles were still all considered to be a single series, albeit with no consistent overall series' name. As such, the listings on Comicvine are split between the title stars each segment of the series featured. Issues #1, 3, 5, 7, 13, 23, 34, 36, 46 and 54 featured British detective Roy Carson. Issues #2, 4, 6, 9, 16, 30, 38, 50 and 52 featured SF adventurer / space hero Swift Morgan. Issues #8, 10, 14, 19, 22, 24, 26, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45 and 49 featured Buffalo Bill. Issues #11, 15, 18, 20, 21, 25, 27, 28, 32, 40, 42, 44, 47, 57, 59 and 61 reprinted Quality Comics' Blackhawk. Issues #12 and 17 reprinted Will Eisner's Spirit. Issues #48, 51 and 55 reprinted Quality's Crack Western title.
